Downtown Dawson (Q+A)

Downtown Dawson is a Frederick hip-hop artist who is performing this Saturday (November 2nd) at Frederick Eagles Club (7-10 PM) with J Berd, Jon Daily, Che Rock and AK-ILL

Q: How long have you been rapping/performing?

A: Since I was 16 years old. Half of my life.
Q: How long have you lived in the Frederick area/been involved in the scene?

A: I moved here in elementary school. After high school I lived in Arizona, Philly, and New York City. I found my way back later on. I’ve always been involved in the scene for the most part.
Q: How would you describe your sound?
A: My “sound” to most people is traditional hip-hop. That’s what I’m most recognized for. I have more fun being experimental. I’ve rapped over everything from live acoustic guitar with no drums to electronic music of the most futuristic kind.. So, to me, I have no sound. To others, I do.
Q: What artists influenced you?
A: Anything that strikes an emotional or physical chord with me. Makes me feel or makes me move. I’m influenced by everything from Wu-Tang Clan to Bjork. I listen to mostly 60’s to late 70’s funk and soul music. Currently, You g Planet, Gus Dapperton, Yellow Days, Iodine p., Ankhlejohn, and Rahiem Supreme are my favorite artists in the world.
Q: What messages are you trying to put across in your music?
A: Personal experience. I don’t try to change how people think, I tell them how I think and feel. Love, politics, and sometimes just rapping to rap to be competitive. I just try to sound thoughtful and clever.
Q: Who are some of your favorite local artists/musicians?

A: My favorite rappers on the planet are local rappers Iodine P. and Cidida. Retro/Ricole, Jay Berd, and Beadgawd are friends that I’m big fans of. My cousin Cheff Curry is insanely good.
Q: Who would you like to collaborate with in the future?
A: Iodine P. and I have music together. More coming soon. Cidida and I grew up together musically and have an album and tons of songs together. Jay Berd and I are long overdue to make a bunch of music together. I’m down to make music with anybody. Just send me a track.
Q: What are some of your favorite musical memories?
A: I opened for Wu-Tang Clan years ago. I was on 106 And Park, a popular BET TV show at the time, and battle rapped a couple times. Honestly, my best memories are in the studio or performing live locally. My best musical memory is what I wrote last night.
Q: What can we expect in the future from Downtown Dawson?
A: Lots of music. The most successful independent artists today are dropping multiple albums a year. I’m recording multiple projects as we speak. Dropping merch, vinyl, CD’s, and anything else creative I can physically produce. My goal is to have enough supporters to make a modest living doing what I enjoy.
Q: Where can people find you online/listen?
A: Search “Downtown Dawson” on any streaming platform or online music retailer. I’m there.
